    Default DIY Pool Install?

I'd like to get some thoughts/opinions on self installing a smaller delivered fiberglass pool. My research is conflicting..

They can be had for $4,500-$12,000. $7,500 for something like a 20'x40'. Too good to be true?

For someone who is physically able to do this type of thing, and friends and family to assist, is this a viable way to save some serious cashola?

What types of things typically go wrong?

What do the other expenses add up to (equipment rental, etc.)?

I have NO idea how you would install a fiberglass pool yourself unless you hire a crane. A 20x40' FG is HUGE and I can't imagine one that big, riding down a truck on the highway! It's going to way several tons--imagine that it's a fiberglass boat--and a big one!

SPP is currently advertising a 20x40 FG pool on EBAY for about $7500. But I don't doubt that is too good to be true, for that size. I would much more likely get something smaller.

Are you sure it's a single unit fiberglass pool and not a polymer-walled in-ground kit? I could not find a FG pool by SPP on eBay or on their web site.

A polymer-walled or steel-walled inground pool is definitely a do-it-yourself project for those with sufficient skills.

    . . . membership updated.

@CarlD: Good catch, Carl. I killed his link, but didn't pay attention to what it was. However, here's the description: "20'x40' Inground Rectangle Steel Wall Swimming Pool Kit w/ Step & Deluxe Kit"

My bad about the link. I forget that it's a big no-no for whatever reason, but I respect the rules, and apologize. It's on eBay and I just came across it from searching "small fiberglass pool." I wasn't paying attention and didn't notice that it's not actually a fiberglass pool, not that that's a bad thing.

Nonetheless, I'm not considering something that large. Just a small pool and I thought it would be interesting to research a bit about DIY. It can be done.

I was just trying to get an idea of what I am looking at as far as equipment rentals and what kind of unexpected things arise that one might not think of being their first.

I don't know, but I think DIY and a FG pool are probably a no-go unless you have a crane and experience contracting it.

However, DIY AG and IG pools are definitely possible for the handy home-owner.

Another little adage we have around here: Nobody EVER says "Gosh, I wish my pool wasn't so big!"
