    Default Mix & Match Hayward/Pentair

Ok, I'm kinda green at this.
We have a 15ft round pool with a waterways cartridge filter and 1hp pump @ 9.8 amps.
I hate the cartidges and last year I borrowed an old Hayward EC40 DE filter, rigged it up to my system and loved it, clear water and less chemicals.

The problem is the Ec40 filter has a leak and blows DE back in the water. It so old that I tried figuring out what to replace but its cheaper to buy a new EC40 filter.
Now I want to get a new EC40 filter and high efficiency pump to save $$ on the power bill.
Doing my due diligence I'm now convinced I want a 2speed pump.
I can go with a Hayward Power-flo Matrix 1hp 2 speed but I can't get the low speed AMPS specs. I called Hayward direct and got the high speed amps, 13.8 but the Tech supprt guy said he didnt even have the specs he even looked on the label of the pump His advice was to call AO Smith and ask them. I called and finally got someone who promptly put me into vmail. I left my message but honestly I'm not expecting a call back.

Further research shows that the Pentair Dynamo series is actually better and has lower energy usage. the 3/4hp is 8.8/2.6 amps and the 1hp is 11/2.9 amps. Much better than Hayward.

The only 2 problems I see I have to figure out is the Dynamo doesn't come with a cord, I have find a cord and figure out how to wire it. And the Dynamo is a top discharge vice the Hayward Side discharge
What kind of fitting or union do I need to mate the Pentair Dynamo to the EC40?

    Does this make since?

Thumbs up Re: Mix & Match Hayward/Pentair

Bthom, welcome to the wonderful world of posting

Can't help you with the cord but Al and Carl and some of the others are knowledgeable with electrical matters.

As for the new pump and filter #1 - you might want to look into the EC50 - a bigger filter never hurts and makes maintenance easier.
#2 To mate the pump to the filter 1 1/2" male adapters should work with a little pipe a 90 and a union (though a pool store or good plumbing supply store may have a specialty union that you could use) -- you may have to set the filter up on some cinderblocks or build a little shelf for it so you have the room to make the connections, either way, it shouldn't be a difficult bit of plumbing.

Good luck with the new pump and filter! Have a great swim season!!

Default Re: Mix & Match Hayward/Pentair

I actually got a response back by email from Hayward after I sent them an email last week.
They responded that for the "SP15922s, the amp draw is 11 on high speed and 2.0 on low speed, voltage is also 115v."
So actually the Hayward 1hp is slightly more efficient at low speed @ 2.0 amps vice the 2.6 for the Pentiar Dynamo 3/4hp or 2.9 for the Pentair Dynamo 1hp

    Decisions, decisions......
