    Good luck on that 'lasting 8 years' thing. But, you're in California, so you might make it.

    I thought I'd report back, as promised, now that my pool paint job is done. It turned out great! It took one more gallon of primer than the contractor planned for because my pool had been in need of a paint job for so long it was just sucking up the primer as they put it on, but he didn't charge me extra for that. After watching my contractor I can say that this sort of paint job doesn't seem all that difficult, and I might consider doing it myself next time. If anyone needs a recommendation for a contractor for in-ground pool repair and maintenance, I'd be happy to give you my guys info.

    BTW, it occurred to me that the original poster may have misunderstood his contractor when he said 5 or 6 coats. I think maybe he meant 5 or 6 gallons. 5 or 6 coats just seems crazy for any type of paint job and would certainly cost more than $1700, unless he was painting a bathtub.

    The company is called "The Pool Specialist". It is one guy and his 2 helpers. He is very honest and down to earth. He did a nice job no our pool. Here is his web site: http://thepoolspecialistil.com/
