Bad valve vs small air leak

I have a Hayward filter (S210T)/pump( SP1580X15FP)set up on my above ground pool. Last year during close up I had valve set to “closed” while doing things. Then I left for awhile, came back and my timer started my pump. So it ran without water for awhile (maybe 30-60 mins). So when I opened my pool this year. The pump started right up. But now I am getting this crackling air sound on my return hose and on my filter valve itself. The pump seems to be running alright, but wondering if I screwed up the valve and its sucking in air, or if I am drawing in air from some place else. There are no obvious air bubbles coming from return and the pump basket is primed.
