    Question heat exchanger

Last year because of poor chems (my fault, away to long) got some copper in the water. It was determined that it came for the heat exchanger. I disconnected the heater, corrected the water problem and did not use the heater all season.
My question is ,with the water balanced and kept that way. Can I reconnect the heater without fear of getting copper in the water again. The heater is five years old ,had no leaks ,used in the spring to get the temp up. The header looks fine ,with no corrosion. I need a new gas valve anyway. I'm thinking if there is a question about the exchanger I will look for a new heater.

I think, on a copper pipe, theres little/no special coatings to have damaged- just a little copper dissolved off the pipe!
So, as long as no leaks, it should be safe to use...
