First of nice well informed site you have here.
should i be using stabilizer? is there something else to use instead? it was a reading of 0 at the pool place when they checked my water sample. also algaecide was low. water is clear and no sign of algae after shocking the pool on opening 3 days ago.. regards

If you are using chlorine in your pool, you should be using stabilizer to help shield the chlorine from the sun. If you keep your pool adequately chlorinated, which means 3-5 ppm at all times until you get stabilizer in the pool, then you don't need to use algaecide, which can cause you more problems than it's worth.

Hi and welcome. It would probably be a good idea for you to post a complete set of current water testing results. Then somebody can offer suggestions. Also, tell us what type of pool and its volume and tell us what type of filter you have. Hope you enjoy being a part of our forum!
