Yep, the pool itself is considered an acceptable barrier (fence) as long as there's nothing close that can be used to climb in. The ladders have an auto closing door that covers the steps on the outside.
I appreciate your insight especially the story about your bulging pool - that is exactly the king of problem I want to avoid.

Is it possible to have buyer's remorse before a purchase?

I guess it's possible, but I wouldn't recommend it LOL
