When we got our pool along with the new house we had almost the same issues you are seeing.

You need to get your pool chemistry posted here for a review but there is a good chance it is calcuim percipitating out. Without the chemistry you ( or we ) can't tell, so please post it.

As to how long it will take to clear is hard to say. It will depend on the type of filter you have, how many hours a day you run it, what is causing the milk etc.
