Definition of "Shock"

What is the definition of "Shock?"

Is the simple act of adding bleach (chlorine) just to keep a maintenance level considered shocking? Or is the term reserved for "super-chlorination" or "breakpoint chlorination?"

I'm a little confused aboout this.
