Question on bottom drain and pop ups

I have a pop up system and bottom drain. High winds put a lot of leaves in the pool. the bottom drain does not seem to be working.

How can I clean the bottom drain unit? I have cleaned all above ground filters but pool is not self cleaning.
What are the steps to increase suction or cleaning power with bottom drain system?

Are your drains plumbed to a leaf canister or are they plumbed to the suction side of the pool pump?

i think i figured it out. the valve below the skimmer basket was fully open thus not allowing any suction on the bottom drain. once I closed the valve below basket things started working again.

my goal is no more pool guy by the next 30 days .....saving 70 per month
