I just changed the sand in my filter last year. It calls for 250 lbs. so thats what I put in. Is there any way to know whether it needs more without actually opening it up?

Not that I can think of --that's the down side of the top mount valves. With a side mount valve, inspecting the sand is a 5 - 10 minute process.
