Default Brass coupling on fire hose <=> 1 1/2" PVC ?

I have a nice fire hose that I want to use for backwashing. It has a brass coupling on it that says 1 1/2", but it does not mate with any 1 1/2 " PVC couplings that I have. Is anyone aware of a way to make this work?

From the McMaster-Carr website I found the following information:

There are two main types of fire hose thread. NH (National Hose) , also known as NST (National Standard Thread) is the most common; it is not compatible with any other thread. NPSH (National Pipe Straight Hose) is also a popular choice; female NPSH threads are compatible with male NPT and NPSM (National Pipe Straight Mechanical) threads

They do sell an adapter that will go from NH/NST to NPT go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and look for item number 6523T11. They also have various other sizes and combinations.

I have no affiliation with the above mentioned company other then a very satisfied customer. They typically only charge actual shipping costs with no handling fees. If it is in stock (it will tell you if it is) it ships within hours of placing your order. They seem to be unbelievably efficient.

Greenlight, That's a great idea. I nosed around the web a bit after reading your post and Todd's excellent information and found some fire hoses and adaptors on Ebay (what isn't available there?). You might want to check that out, as well.

Would love to hear how yours works out once you've got it going.

I searched on eBay and asked a seller which item I needed. He pointed to this one:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Fire-Hose-Br...QQcmdZViewItem
    or search for item 7769289291
It has a male NST end to fit my fire hose, and a female NPT end that the seller says will fit the PVC threads. I am going to buy one, I will let you know how it works.

Thanks for all of this great information - I found a similar item on eBay for less money and will see how it works.
I got this fire hose at a garage sale for $10, which is similar to what McMaster-Carr sells for over $100.
