Well, your issue appears unrelated to the SWG. It may possibly be as simple as backwashing but I wouldn't rush out and backwash immediately. Tell us just a little more about your pool. How many gallons? What type of filter? What size pump? It sounds like you have only one skimmer and one return...correct? Post those back and I think we'll have a handle on your problem....and I don't think it's too serious.

As an aside the filter is the round tank. it is attached to the pump that has the strainer basket (the lid you take off to clean). The outlet part of the filter probably has a multiport valve attached to it with various settings. That terminology will help you describe your system and issues a little more clearly.
