I put up an above ground pool last summer. The pool encroached on a hill in the yard, making me have to dig out about 1 1/2 feet. I dug out about 12 inches wider to make sure i had room to manipulate the pool wall into place and it was barely enough space, but got the job done. When the pool was up and full, I lined the 'underground' portion of the pool wall with plastic sheeting (to keep dirt/rocks off the wall) and filled in the trench mostly with the dirt i removed, then a layer of landscape fabric, then a thin layer of river stone. That way most of the extra removed dirt had somewhere to go, and cheaper then filling all the way with stone
