You are doing it right - and on filter is correct. How low is your ph? If it is below 7.0, I wouldn't wait for the aeration to bring it up. I'd add Borax now. (BTW - don't be afraid to add Borax. It is perfectly fine to do so. I do it all the time. Well, not all the time, because my ph is pretty stable. But, when it does dip a little low, I add some.)
