i have the metal box one as well and i can tell you that at least in canada, and as of yesterday, it's up to code as i had an electrician in to quote me on some wiring changes for new equipment. the only thing is that it should be wired to a ground fault circuit interrupter breaker. (as should everything in your pool installation anyway)
