    Sherra,

Cal-Hypo that is 65% pure and (it turns out) produces about 65% available chlorine has 1 pound equivalent to 1.22 gallons of 6.15% bleach (typical Clorox regular bleach). It would take about 1.06 gallons of 7% Ultra bleach and about 1.42 gallons of 5.25% bleach.

1 gallon of 5.25% bleach is equivalent to 0.69 pounds of 65% Cal-Hypo while 1 gallon of 6.15% bleach is equivalent to 0.82 pounds of 65% Cal-Hypo.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, that helps a lot! Thanks! I think getting the 65% Cal Hypo at $1.30/pound (bulk bucket) is worth it then!

Yes, it would be economical at that price. Just keep an eye on your calcium levels if you end up using this as your only source of chlorine. 1 pound of 65% Cal-Hypo increases the Calcium Hardness (CH) by 5.5 ppm in a 10,000 gallon pool (the ppm rise would be less in a larger pool, etc.) and depending on the specific brand you use it could increase calcium even more (it depends on what the 35% inert ingredients are -- sometimes some of them are calcium salts such as calcium chloride and calcium hydroxide).

Thanks. I knew I'd have to keep an eye on the calcium. I'm fine for now - it's between 40 & 50 right now - and I've got a 27,500 gallon pool, so it should take me a while to get a lot built up. Plus I do still plan on using good old fashioned Wally World 6% bleach also.
