Some completely sealed motors are filled with an oil. Purpose of this is cooling and lubrication. One of my Flotec sump pumps was like this and like you I lost some of the oil when I opened it. Think I used a light weight motor oil to top off. Use the pump to top off and drain the pool so it's seen a good bit of service and still working fine after probably 4 years.
