Skimmer and return question.

I have an older 20x40 IG vinyl pool. The pool only has one skimmer and return.

Does anybody have any experience with a similar setup? I have been experimenting with the return eyeball to achieve the best skimming action possible, but I am still having to do a ton of hand skimming. The skimmer and return jet are on the same wall of the pool.

Do you have a weir door on your skimmer, if not, it makes a big difference in how much the skimmer sucks in.

Do you also have a low drain? That improves circulation. There are also options that are supposed to improve skimmer performance. I don't know if they work very well.

I do have a door on the skimmer. The pool drain is located on the same wall as the skimmer and return. The drain is only about 12 inches from the surface.
