Ron, another source is the multiport. If it only happens when you add the DE, I'd say that the multi is the reason. Also, have you tried charging the filter on 'low'?

could a bad backwash valve cause this ?

Ron, sorry for the delayI'm afraid you'll have to inspect the element in the filter for rips or separation. Take it out and give it a good hosing, then get in to all the pleats, start with where the pleats join the plastic ends - of the 2 I've seen for this problem, that's where it's been.
