    Philbo,
    I'd split it into the two periods. That will even out your chlorine additions more than a single period and minimize the time period over which you're not adding any chlorine.

    The morning period should end before an hour or two before the sun hits the pool. That way the chlorine will do it's job before being eaten by sunlight.

    That sounds like good logic ..
