I'm a little confused. Is there water in the pump basket? If something broke, like the impeller came off the motor shaft, then the motor will gradually slow down when power is switched off. It will coast to a stop because there is no load on the motor. Same as no water in the basket. No load. A normally functioning pump will stop real quick. Keep us posted.
