    Would this area to hold the shaft be withn the motor itself or the pump?

    Typically the back end of the motor, the end opposite the pump end. Under that back cover there is usually the centrifugal starter switch and in some cases the starting capacitor.

    Al,
    Thanks very much for the help. The seal was the problem. Replaced it myself for $20. Probably saved at least $100. What a great forum. Has saved me tons over the years.
