While I'm usually the first to say "bad shaft seal" (SP 1600 Z 2 ), I like Al's approach.

If you can look closely enough, you can see if the water is coming from between the housing and the seal plate or from behind the mounting plate (they're close together and it's usually hard to get a good enough angle to tell the difference) - I'd do as Al suggests and try tightening the bolts before changing the seal assembly

I had a similar problem last year towards the end of my pool season, and left it go till the end of the season. Hindsight, probably should have done something sooner, for I had a pretty good squeal coming from the pump last year.

This is a pretty easy fix. I got a complete seal rebuilt kit from the pool store, cost about $36, and took about 1/2hr.

The main seal (ceramic) was pretty shot, all looks good now.
