    Default 99% Chlorine Pucks

I have a 24' above ground, sand filter pool. Current stats: Ph 7.2, CL somewhere above 5 (I'm awaiting delivery of a more accurate test kit), CYA 60, TA 80. I'm adding baking soda to increase the TA today since I think it's supposed to be over 100.

I am wondering if I can use the 3" chlorine pucks in addition to bleach simply because they are more compact and convenient. The label says they are 99% trichlor and 1% other ingredients and doesn't mention stabilizer, but is it in there anyway? I don't want to add any more stabilizer since mine's already at 60.

    Thanks in advance

The chemical Tri-Chlor IS stabilized by its very composition and you should not use it with your CYA of 60. As Tri-Chlor releases chlorine, it also releases CYA (stabilizer) .Plus Tri-Chlor is highly acidic so you shouldn't use them because your pH is 7.2

Bottom line: You should not use pucks in your pool at this time and probably not for the rest of the season.

To add to what CarlD said, unless you're having problems maintaining a stable pH, I would leave the TA alone.

    Thanks all!

I did raise the Ph to 7.6 with borax and dumped in a shock dose of bleach. I guess I'll be trekking to my local hardware store more frequently for 10% chlorine. Their price on the 10% is low enough that it's a wash whether I use that or the 6% from Wal-Mart.

This is a great forum. I'm glad I found it. It has saved me money and frustration over the last couple of years, so I finally decided to jump in (pun intended).
