pits and red algae

Copper doesn't cause pits. Stains, maybe. No pits.

Low pH (acid) causes pits. So do various type of surface defects.

These pits were there when I moved in, and that's what I was told. Didn't make sense to me either. I did put a chlorine tab on a brite red spot, and indeed overnight it bleached it out. Now that the pH is correct, and I added 20# of stabilizer, do you think a bunch of shock and chlorine tabs in the skimmers/pump basket might get rid of the red? In another thread I was told it is not algae, but a bacteria. the pool is approx 44,000 gal. Again the water is crystal clear, but the red spots are ugly. I have been informed (you know, told) to get rid of them pronto.

Do NOT leave the chlorine pucks on the spots long; they will etch &/or discolor the surface.

You'll need the K2006 kit in order to manage the chlorine levels you'll need to get rid of the stuff. Getting a good nylon bristle pool brush would help, too. (If you use it!)

Did you really put 20# of stabilizer in? That's about 60ppm, if it all dissolves! If you did, turn your feeder UP, and use an cheap OTO drops chlorine test to check chlorine levels. You'll need to stay in the dark yellow range.

When did you add the stabilizer and how did you add it? If you added it through the skimmer and it was maybe yesterday, you could backwash and get most of it out and keep that CYA level from getting too high. If it has been more than a few days, then it has probably already dissolved in the water.
