Cool Sand Filter & Pool Pump Sizing "Rule of Thumb"

Is there a Rule of Thumb for sizing a sand filter and pool pump? How many times should the pump turn over the water every 8 hours, etc. What should the sand filter size ratio be to the pool? I noticed that some sand filters have two different gpm ratings. One for Residential and another usually much less for commercial.

We are installing a 20,000 gallon in-ground salt water pool with the Pentair IC60 SWCG, Pentair 3hp variable speed pump, turbo twister slide with its own 1/2 hp 40 gpm supply pump, and will use a Pentair DE 60 sq ft filter instead of the sand filter (because the contractor claimed that the sand might not work well with the Pentair in-pool pop up cleaners?). We decided to install a separate pump for the slide supply water so as not to interfere with the connected spa using the same pool pump. This way we can isolate the spa while it is in use and not spilling the heated water back into the pool. Undoubtably when the grand kids are over and we are using the spa they will want to use the slide and there goes the heated water?
