The Polaris return adaptor for the 165 (the bigger version of the 65) is designed to be left in place all season. However, I don't think it performs quite as well as an eyeball. The only drawbacks I see to constantly swapping it is time and the stress it puts on the adapter--you may break or damage it changing it so much.

I don't use my Polaris 65 anymore, but when I did, I removed the adaptor when not using it. I like to be able to aim my eyeball where I want to. Sometimes at the top to skim floating stuff and head it into the skimmer and sometimes more downward for better circulation.

I don't have the Polaris 65, I have the Turbo Turtle but I assume that the connection is the same. I was able to purchase an eyeball that attaches to the Polaris return adapter, in the same way the hose attaches.
