If you go with a smaller pump,you wouldn't have to replace the filter. Unless, it has been damaged by your current WAY too big pump.

Do you run your pump mostly on high or low speed? It should filter better and last longer at low speed.

It seems that Baquapure mates the 2.5 hp pump to the 26" (200lb) sand filter all the time. I don't know much about the product but it seems an odd combo.

We usually run it on low but when backwashing like recently its been on high.
Is that the proper way?
So, should we swap out for a smaller system?

Yeah, low most of the time, high for backwash.

I can't tell you what to do, I can only tell you what I have. You have to make your choice of either spending money on new or waiting till THIS pump burns out as well in 2 years--and the betting is strong that it will.

But if it were me, and a matched set burned out 2 times in 5 years, well, I wouldn't have kept the same brand after the second burn-out.

I have a 20,000 gallon AG FantaSea, 40'x16' and I use a 200lb Hayward sand filter with a top-mounted multivalve. I mated that with a Hayward 1 hp 2 speed SuperPump (an IG pump) and have been running trouble-free for now 8 years. The SuperPump does require a 220v line.

My run to the return is ball-park 15', about on the same level as the multivalve, and my drains are my skimmer and low drain--skimmer's about 15' and low drain's about 8' from the pump--again about the same level.

There are other choices and certainly companies like Hayward and Jacuzzi and others make all-in-one filter and pump combos with matched sizes.
